MSSU: Day of Silence Sit-In

As you may have heard, MSSU in Joplin, MO (Southwest Missouri) is having a difficult struggle with the school President and Board of Governors in regards to their nondiscrimination policy. They have been asking for the Board to approve adding sexual orientation and gender expression to the school nondiscrimination policy. After a Board member’s homophobic slur and resignation from the Board, the fight has gotten bigger and more difficult. After weekly sit-ins and protests, Student Senate and Faculty Senate support, and consistent work, the President and the Board are making it very clear, in both action and voice, that they will be ignoring the organization and school support.

On Day of Silence 2010, the GSA at MSSU is asking other GSAs across the state to be silent not just in honor of the silence of LGBTQ folks across the state, but particularly the forced silence of the LGBTQ students at MSSU.

SO… Queers and Allies are sending troops to MSSU campus to help show our support. We would LOVE other campus groups to come and show their support for this campus. Sign’s would be beneficial to this as well. Let’s not let what happened on the UCM campus to happen at MSSU before they add a zero tolerance policy. We will be leaving Warrensburg no later than 10am the day of.. other groups are encouraged to go as well. If everyone would like to meet in Warrensburg and then make a car parade that is fine as well. I encourage other groups to wear their t-shirts if they have them to show the RANGE of places we all come from and the joint effort of all GSA’s through out Missouri.

We hope EVERYONE can attend. please spread this to ANYONE who would be interested in increasing their numbers and showing our support for the amedment to their non-discrimination policy.

Bake Sale

Queers and Allies will be having a Bake Sale!!! It is going to be on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 in Martin @ 9 am. I hope everyone can come and help out. We will be at the table until 3pm. Come bring something and help us get donations!!! Hope to see everyone there!

 

Volleyball Games

This week is our first volleyball game!!! We would like people to come out and support the team. Our first game is this Wednesday, the 30th @ 9pm in the multi court 2.  To the people on the team we all probably want to get there early so there is no chance of a forfeit and maybe to practice.

Tonight we will be doing a mock panel to show everyone what panels are and how to go about conducting one in a classroom. As well, t-shirt designs are due tonight. Hope to see everyone there!

The first meeting of the semester is September 3, 2009 @ 7pm in Union 219. There will be a sign posted if the room has changed or you can check at the information desk. We will also be at the Involvement Fair on Wednesday, August 19 @ 3pm till 5pm in the Union Ballroom.

There is an Exec. Board meeting tonight (Thursday Aug. 21) @ 7:15. Actual meetings will resume next Thursday the 28th @ 7. We hope to see all the new and old faces!!

 

SAFEzone Training

There are two SAFEzone training sessions during the Week of Welcome on the UCM campus. They will be held on Monday, August 18th from 4-6pm in Union 233 and on Thursday, August 21st from 4-6pm in Union 233. We are also going to have a table set up at the Involvement Fair which is held in the Union on Wednesday, August 20th from 3-5pm. Come by and check us out!!

 

Meeting!!

Today is Thursday!! We know what that means…. Meeting time! Tonight we will be talking with some people from Lighthouse. We are going to let you know how to make changes to the constitution. This will be a very informative meeting. Hope to see all of you there at 7 p.m.!!
